It is based on the time it takes for the earth to make one complete rotation on its axis as it orbits the sun. Humans have arbitrarily decided to divide that amount of time into 24 equal time spans, and called those time spans "hours".Because 24 hours is only approximate, we add on an extra day to the Gregorian calendar every four years to get it back in synch.

A day on other planets would be different lengths.

24 hours is the amount it time it takes for the earth to circle around the Sun. Remember: the Sun does not move around us, we move around the sun.

Most often it is not 24 hours from one sunset to the next. Check your sunrise/sunset charts.
