Dear Jflam,I am going to give one opinion here...because I think the short answer to your question is FEAR. People forget that we are all in this life together, and they start to believe that happiness and freedom from fear is found by accumulating for yourself at the expense of others. If you are in the USA, then you have seen that happen a lot lately; people forget about our oneness with each other, and the gap between rich and poor grows ever wider. But there is a natural law in life, and anything out-of-harmony with the law of love contains the seeds of its own destruction - so nations decline. The answer of course is very simple; for each of us just to live up to the finest we know. Mother Teresa; "It is not how much we do, it is how much we put in the doing. Small things...with great love."And no worry that there are so many greedy people. The Peace Pilgrim says; "A few really dedicated people can offset the ill effects of masses of out-of-harmony people, so we who work for peace must not falter."The Peace Pilgrim here has actually given us the definition of power; the power of your own heart is greater than any atom bomb, no more than a mosquito flick.

I believe some of the cause can be blamed on loosing a grip on the reason the nation was founded in the first place and why it has to be continually fought for. America was created for reasons different than most in that the first arrivals did not come to conquer but to escape oppression. When England arrived to conquer, the freedom loving citizens banded together to defeat them. Now America is being defeated from within because freedom is taken for granted and too much trust is placed in the leadership. Too many have quit thinking for themselves and are too weak to stand up for principle. That's what I believe.

No it's because they gave away too much to those that don't contribute and bankrupted those that do

Every great nation that has forgotten God has been eventually cast down. From Babylon to Rome to Greece to the USA, God raises up kings, makes their nation great, or He can raise up a new nation in their stead

Because the good of the society is abandoned for the desires of every individual person. Stoicism gives birth to Epicureanism, and Epicureanism gives birth to Apathy when the latest and greatest pleasure does not fill the individuals' desires. Apathy then gives birth to a dead community where all motivation is lost, and then the nation crumbles.
