i wanted to make a backyard forge. i live in central California. i would use it to heat metal, bend it, and generally shape it. it it legal?

Depends on your local codes and state law, you also have consider if it is a hobby, or for a profit!

I don't see why not. Unless codes prohibits fires....charcoal and.a bellows is best
