Initially they were looking for a quick trade route to Asia. They had a pretty good idea of the size of the world based on their understanding of geometry and navigation. They reasoned that if they sailed due West it would be a shorter route to Asia then if they sailed around Africa. They just didn't know the Americas were there. They basically stumbled upon them. In fact when they arrived they thought they were in Asia and wrongly named the people they found Indians. To this day people call the ancestors of the people they found Indians. Their lust of gold among other things came later.

Initially exploration and to spread the word of God, both Portuguese and Spanish were a sea faring nation. The discovery of huge hordes of gold that the Indians in Central America had access to changed priorities and the witnessing of the human sacrifices by the Inca really angered them.

Actually yes, they came to Americas thinking that the Indians had huge store houses full of gold.
