Mount Rushmore or Colorado Springs. We will go to one of them on our way back from Yellowstone/Tetons. We want to do things that aren't purely touristy. We like nature, unique things, and want something educational. Also give suggestions for things to do in area that are cheap or free.
Colorado Springs is the jumping point for Pikes Peak (You have go to Manitou Springs for the Cog Wheel ride up, though). The Garden of the Gods is a free public park great for hiking.Check with the US Forest Service to see what the status is of the Waldo Canyon. They had a nasty wild fire there a couple of years ago so I do not know what that looks like now (Same with Royal Gorge further west. A fire last summer has closed that down).Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument - also further west - is fun to explore. And do not forget about geocaching anywhere along your trip. www.geocaching.com/about That will take you places you never knew existed.
Mount Rushmore is a historical monument of great beauty and value, I would definitely visit there with my teens; if not this trip, schedule another one specifically for this monument.
