I once asked Mary Stewart why she had killed off a major character in her Merlin trilogy. She said that her father had died while she was writing it and she worked out her grief by writing about the death of a loved character. Questions? -- Where did you get the idea? -- How much of it is based on real life? -- How many of the characters are based on people you know? -- Is your book autobiographical? -- How much time do you spend writing? -- How many re-writes did you have to do? -- How did you find a publisher? And on, and on, and on. But you get the idea.

How to they get all the ideas for such dastardly and evil things their villains do? How long on average does it to do the research for a book?
