You need to provide him with the litter box and make sure it remains at a specific place. Since he is still young, you need a shallow litter box and somewhere easy for it to access. Put it in the litter box anytime you notice it keeps searching for a place to squat. With time, it will get used to it and don't forget to be cleaning it regularly.

Potty training pads that puppy's use kittens can use them too just place the potty pads where the kitten goes or train your kitten to use the litter box

Make sure its not by his food. Try keeping him in one room with the liter box until he gets it. For the most part it should come natural to him. If the problem persists, talk to your vet.If he's not fixed (or even if he is sometimes) he may be trying to mark his territory.
