As in all things, God's ultimate purpose for us is to grow more and more into the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). This is the goal of the Christian, and everything in life, including the trials and tribulations, is designed to enable us to reach that goal. It is part of the process of sanctification, being set apart for God's purposes and fitted to live for His glory. The way trials accomplish this is explained in 1 Peter 1:6-7:""In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which perishes, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." The true believer's faith will be made sure by the trials we experience so that we can rest in the knowledge that it is real and will last forever.Read more: http://www.gotquestions.org/trials-tribulations.html#ixzz2kXFJPSg0

According to religious people, they are sent to test us, but for what I don't know. Are we expected to face worse and worse things? - - - I think bad things just happen, and they happen more often to people who expect their god to protect them because then the people are not watchful of what's coming. It's like if you expect god to protect you from storms, when the dark clouds come, you don't go inside. So you get really cold and wet and maybe sick. While people who were careful of the weather went in and stayed dry and warm.

It`s a poor attempt by religious people to explain why their fairy tale includes evil.

The bible states in James1:2-4- Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. ***Trials and tribulations happen to test your faith and help you develop perseverance, so that you be mature and not lack anything.

The Bible reveals that our trials are permitted by God but actually originate with Satan, his wicked system, and our own imperfect nature. (Genesis 6:5; Deuteronomy 32:4, 5; John 15:19; James 1:14, 15) Jehovah is the source of “every good gift and every perfect present.” (James 1:17) Hence, his blessings never cause pain.In this time of the end, Satan has intensified his efforts. He has been hurled down to the earth. He knows that his time is short, and he has “great anger.” Determined to bring down as many humans as possible, he “is misleading the entire inhabited earth.” (Revelation 12:9, 12) “The blessing of Jehovah—that is what makes rich, and he adds no pain with it.”—PROVERBS 10:22. Jehovah will bless us with wisdom if we persist in praying for it. To gain wisdom, we must also keep listening to Jehovah by regularly studying and applying his Word.

Trials aren't given to certain people. They are a natural phenomenon of life . Most are caused by choices we make. It's how we deal with that particular trial is how we'll be held accountable.
