caterpillars is the start off! You see, caterpillars are before butterflys. a random caterpillar eats a bunch of food. once it gets fat, It turns itself into a cocoon. In a couple days, it breaks out off the cocoon and has wings. It can go into some other designs than a monarch. This is my answer.

Male and female do the butterfly shag, a bit later mom lays eggs. Baby caterpillars come out, eat like mad for several days, spin a cocoon, metamorphize and a few days later a butterfly emerges.
