Which is better protection for a musical instrument: a rectangular case or a contoured case?

E.g., Protec Contoured Alto Sax Pro Pac versus Protec Standard Alto Sax Pro Pac

Either is perfectly fine, but I'd suggest rectangular actually. The rectangular give more cushioning inside, and also there's more space between your instrument and the walls of the case where soft cushioning holds it in place. So bumping a rectangular case around is less likely to hurt your instrument.

Rectangular seems to give better protection than the contoured yet the contoured is way lighter. I personally prefer the contour. So if you play a lighter instrument like the flute, I would probably say rectangular but if you played the tuba I would probably say the contour.

I would think a bigger difference would be that the interior has straps to hold the instrument in place so it doesn't be bumped around.

Contour.
