How can a person remember memories they want, but can't?

i have been talking with a few people this month who remember things i've done, but i can't remember anything their talking about, non the less anything for earlier years.
Some people who have photographic memory can remember by organizing their memories visually like in a circle or in a house and each room containing certain memories I have also heard of people who can remember things by scent and other strange ways. This may or may not help you right now but it could help with future memories.
It's just they remember something specific that you don't remember. But it's probably tucked away in there somewhere.
Perhaps those things never really made an impression on you, there were not that significant that you would remember them; then again maybe they are wrong and it never happened, they are confusing you with someone else.
